Kim and Huey (below)

My name is Kim, and I got married on a glacier in Juneau, Alaska, and work for one of the Big Three. I enjoy being outside in my yard, pulling weeds, and taking care of the garden. I also eat and can what I grow. I enjoy taking pictures of my dogs and wildlife, like hummingbirds and butterflies. From childhood, I have had all kinds of animals in my life and love all animals. I never had any children, so of course my dogs are my Kidz. We have not tried to foster any animals, because we know we would never let them leave and we do not have the room. But we do believe that adoption is a must.

We had never had a deaf dog before Huey. My husband Jim and I found Huey on Petfinders, and went to meet him with our (hearing) dog Brandy. We all fell in love with him, a deaf and crossed-eyed boy. This was the beginning of a new and wonderful life, living with a deaf dog. Jim and I did not know anything about deaf dogs, but found DDEAF and the Deafdogs Yahoo!Group, and bought a few books about ASL to learn how to communicate with Huey. Huey loved to learn and was also a very unique dog. He liked to lie on the kitchen table when we were sleeping or not at home, to bark at airplanes, and he also liked to hide things.

At this time we do not have a deaf dog (we lost Huey to a brain tumor in 2008), but I know there is one for us in the future. I am a Charter Member of D2Care, and appreciate the chance to serve on the Board. I hope to make D2Care the best Resource and Educational site possible for new deaf dog owners.
